It is Cool To be Square

Today is the day to reveal my It is Cool to be Square project.  On my way to the sewing room one day when thinking about what to make  I saw these strawberries growing wild in the garden.

Unfortunately the bandicoots and possums seems to like  strawberries as much as I do and they never get any bigger than this or ripen properly.

This inspired me to use this last piece of leftover fabric which is one of my favourite pieces that I have hung onto forever even though it is only  6 1/2" x 6 1/2".   Why because strawberries are my favourite fruit and you just never know when you might just need that very last little piece.

Next thought was what am I going to do with  a small piece?     Teaming it with some white and green

I thought that it would make a  table mat for the dining table so just to be sure that to be  square I chose the square within a square block and here is the result.

It is the first time that I have used a single fold binding and I am not real happy with the result.  I had trouble getting a neat and even mitre on the corners.     I chose to use this method as I thought that the normal binding would be too wide and cut too much off the white points.

Thanks Carol for organising another fun blog hop and to see more Cool Squares just follow the links below.

Love it! I had to use single fold recently because I ran low on the fabric. I agree, too fiddly on the miter!

Square-in-a-square, in a square, in a square - a perfect pattern. What a lovely way to showcase that last little piece of loved fabric. I understand about the wilds that eat your wild strawberries...did you know that wild strawberries are naturally very small fruit?

Well, if you can't eat your strawberries, then looking at them on your table is a great alternative. LOL!! I love these fun fabrics.

Pretty strawberry fabric and the mat is a nice project. I love homegrown picked fresh strawberries! The store bought are never ripe or good. I miss having strawberries to pick.

It's so typical of us quilters to hold onto certain fabrics as we wait for the "perfect" project to use them in. That strawberry fabric is so pretty and worth the wait for using it in your table mat. Love it! Thanks for being a cool hopper with us!

What a nice way to use your treasured strawberry fabric! And those durned bandicoots and possums need to learn to share the strawberries with you. Nothing like a fresh, home-grown strawberry.

Sometimes the most simple is the best. Great.

I've a three guest strawberry plants. Fortunately, I get to them before the critters, though they're pretty small.

Cute! I love that strawberry print--great that you hung on the what's left, it's always nice to use every little bit of favorite fabrics!

I don't think I could choose my favorite fruit, I simply love all fruit, but bananas and strawberries are high up on my list of fruits I love the most. Even when I order a shake at my fav fast food place it's a Strawberry and Banana shake... sometimes I like them to throw some pineapple in also. :)

This is really a beautiful fabric I can see why it's hard to give up, but you did that 6 1/2 inch square justice, it's a beautiful project that you'll have forever.

They look so yummy, I can almost taste them! I wish we could grow strawberries but we've never had luck. We do have raspberries though.

Hope you got some strawberries at least. My munchkin loves picking and eating them from our garden. Love your table mat. Great idea using that design.
