Show Your Stripes

Carla at Creating in the Sticks is always organising a fun blog hop and this one is no exception.   When looking at my stash I did realise that there is a distinct lack of stripes however I have been working with a fun range of toucan fabric which did include stripes so my dilemma was not a dilemma at all.    Unfortunately it did not make it to the finish line but there is a flimsy to share with you all.

Now it is time to do some blog hopping to see more stripes

FNSI

Not much time has been spent in the sewing room this week however all of the 192 x 4" squares for the HST sampler quilt are now cut and two of the blocks are together.

Last night when joining Wendy and the other crafters for FNSI a start was made on the third block.

I have to say that making these blocks is quite time consuming so progress is on the slow side - lots of trimming and pressing is needed to get sharp points.

Don't forget to see what everyone else got up to last night here.

A finish and the next step

Time has been spent in the sewing room this past week working on a few items - namely getting my first attempt at scappy applique to the finish line.

I decided to make my leaf in autumnal tones seeing that we are now in the last month of summer.   It was a relatively easy process and I can see more scrappy applique projects happening in the future.

Once that was finished I moved onto the next step of my toucan quilt.   The rectangles are now joined to the smaller squares.

Time was also spent cutting up 4" squares for my challenge quilt.   A total of 96 4" squares is needed for the background fabric and a mixture of  96 4" squares from the remaining 8 fabrics.    There is quite a bit of cutting to be done before construction can begin.

Progess on two fronts

Good progress is being made on my fun toucan quilt.    First step was to sew the two small squares together and then getting them pinned to the rectangles.

Putting that aside it was time to have a play with the pieces of my scrappy applique.

One of the members of my small Tuesday quilt group has given us a challenge.    She has chosen this pattern

And  kindly offered us access to her vast stash to pick our fabrics and on completion of the quilts they are to be donated to the local hospital auxiliary of which two of us are members.

Fabric choosing took place during the week.   I went the safe option of red, white and shades of grey

The other choice was lilac/mauve and green

And the 3rd choice was completely different with aqua, orange and mustards

We are aiming for one block every week.  It will be interesting to see them grow and if the different colourways affect the final product.

Don't forget to head on over here to see what the other crafters achieved when joining in with FNwF which is organised by Cheryll on the first Friday night of each month.

Decision Time

I was given this pretty and vibrant fabric a while ago and it is time that it was broken out of its packet.

It has been taken out of the cupboard a few times looked at and put back as I was not sure how it was to end up.  The one thing I did know was that it was not going to be cut up into small squares as the toucans needed to be showcased.

After much thinking out came a piece of paper to draw up a rough diagram.  (Every quilter can relate to the messy scribblings and measurements which would mean nothing to anyone else but themselves.)

Which is loosely based on a quilt that I made quite a few years ago

The pieces are now cut and ready to go through the machine

Getting the blocks together will be my OMG for February.
