Just out of the oven

I found this recipe for apple and walnut muffins that I used to make many years ago and somehow forgot about it until today.    Out with the flour, eggs, walnuts, apples and rolled oats.  Mix them altogether and  after 25 mins in the oven this is the result.  The mixture did make 12 but hubs and I had to do a taste test before displaying them publicly.    The verdict…..delicious.

While they were baking in the oven I then decided to make a vegetable bake to go with some chicken for dinner tonight.     I did make double quantity  so that we could enjoy it again for dinner tomorrow night.    It  just needs to be covered in foil and baked for 45 mins then remove the foil and continue to bake for about 15/20  mins until cheese is golden brown.

Now that dinner is all sorted up for the next two days I can head to the sewing room and continue sewing up my 2 1/2" squares.

To the Dark Side

Yesterday saw the end of my "home quilting retreat" and I spent what time I had separating each colour group of sewn squares from the long chain and ironing them to the dark side.

My goal for July was to hopefully show you many completed blocks but this is as far as I got.

Progress report on hubs is good.  He only has to attend hospital 3 times a week for re-dressing of his foot starting from today and he can now drive himself again.

I have a confession to make....I was not as restrained with the  bar of chocolate as I would have normally been and this is what was left by the time I finished the ironing part.

This is the Front

And this is the back

Those seeing double blocks that I was working on and off during last week have now been turned into a pretty make up bag with the help of a square or three of chocolate.

Chocolate does help

I was pleased with the progress yesterday afternoon that was made at my "home retreat".    Quite a few of the squares have now been chained together

As you can see my chocolate bar is placed under the sewing extension just within reach of my hand but away from the squares so  they do not end up with chocolate all over them.

Today I am going to have a break from 2 1/2" squares and try to finish off the project using the blocks with the Japanese ladies that were fussy cut for the middle.

Boo Hoo

Those of you who have been reading my blog over the last 2 weeks will know that hubs has not been well and I did - note did - have plans to attend my annual 3 day quilting retreat starting today.   Well that was not meant to be as hubs is needing to attend  the hospital on a daily basis until???? for wound dressing and at this point he is unable to  drive himself so I have had to step up and put on my "taxi driver's hat" until such stage that he can drive again.

I decided that while I cannot be at the retreat with the others I will try to fit in as much sewing as I can in between doing the domestic duties, preparing meals, taxiing etc.     Off to the sewing room and my first job was to wind a couple of bobbins

Then set up my box of little coloured and white squares waiting to be sewn along with a block of my favourite chocolate to help console me.

On the upside hubs foot and leg are progressing in the right direction which is good news.

Seeing double

While hubs is being attended to by the nursing team each day I take the opportunity to sneak off to my sewing room and try to get in some sewing.     Those fabrics that I was playing around with the other day now look like this

Not sure when the project will be finished as this week starts the rounds of doctors appointments and further testing for hubs but it can sit patiently on the sewing table until I can pick up it at some point during the week.

What a week......

Not a good week health wise for poor hubs.    He collapsed on the bedroom floor in the early hours of Sunday morning and found himself in the back of an ambulance for a ride to our local hospital.    After a thorough examination and blood tests the diagnosis is cellulitis.   He spent 4 days in hospital and is now home with a nursing team visiting him daily for the next 4 days to administer his antibiotics intravenously along with doing blood tests and wound care.

Needless to say that sewing was put on the backburner however I did manage to sneak away while one of the nurses was with him for 2 hours today.    So far I have hopefully managed to cut enough coloured and white squares together with black and white strips to give me a good start at the quilting retreat next week.     My attending will entirely depend on the patient's progress this week so fingers and toes crossed for a speedy recovery.

Once my little squares were all piled up neatly and in order I went on to have play with some fabric

The plan is to get these cut and maybe even sewn up over the weekend but I am happy that I was at least able to achieve what I did today for FNSI

Trial block

Last night was FNwF which gave me the opportunity to make a start on my new project and do a trial block.

I was inspired by this post to give this block a go but decided to make all the coloured squares within each block the same so during the week I have been cutting 4 little squares of  the same coloured fabrics however there is still a pile to be cut.   I will try to have a couple of cutting sessions over the next few weeks so my little coloured and white squares together with the black and white fabrics will all be ready to just sit and sew by the time quilt retreat is on at the end of the month.

Thanks Cheryll for giving us the opportunity to share our work with others.

The aim is....

To cut out the white/cream and coloured fabrics into 2 1/2" squares.   Each block will use 4 coloured and 4 white squares and once sewn together they will  then be bordered with the black/white fabrics.  These are the fabrics that I have chosen to use.

I am going off to a quilt retreat at the end of the month and from my past experiences at quilt retreats it is best to go with most of the fabrics - if not all - cut ready to sew as space is very limited.   In past years there have been around 35 ladies attending however this year there are 51 going so you can see what I mean about limited space.

Some of the fabrics have already been cut but most not so I will make my OMG for July to cut out the fabrics and hopefully have something nice to show at the end of the quilt retreat.     Definitely not a finish but perhaps a good start.

Back soon with progress shots and maybe even a trial block and in the meantime
