Chookshed Stitchers Challenge #2 finish

#2 on my challenge list was 2 reading cushions.  Front

And back showing the envelope closing which I find much easier than putting in zips or doing buttonholes.

While in the sewing room this audio book was keeping me company.

Thanks Deana for organising this fun challenge and I look forward to seeing which number comes up next.  Time to head on over here to see what the other challengers achieved.

This week in the sewing room

Saw some quilting happening.

What a big difference the wide throat on my new sewing machine makes when quilting - no more  wrestling with the bulkiness of the quilt and having to roll and push it through a small area.

Then onto a finish.   The request was for 80 cm x 80 cm and I am pleased to say that it ended up being 81cm x 81cm so my maths worked out.

Once that one was completed more 6" squares were cut for 4 more quilts.   They were just laid out in order to be photographed

And now sit in a pile on the edge of the sewing table waiting to be sewn together but before that happens I need to finish off my Chookshed challenge #2 which is due this week.

FNSI

Was on again last night however I was able to make a start after lunch by pulling out some of the stash with prints suitable for childrens' quilts.  These are being donated to the local hospitals not for sale at the auxiliary stalls.    A lot of maths needed to be done as the size required is 80 cm x 80 cm and for someone who works in inches for quilting the tape measure needed to be consulted to convert and it was found that 80 cm equals 31 1/2" - not easy to work with.   Once lots of multiplying and dividing was done the squares were cut at 6 " with 25 of them are required so that when sewn together it ends up being 28" square and with borders of 2 1/2" it will  finish at 32".   Close enough  to 31 1/2" me thinks.

After a  lot of rummaging through that pile these fabrics were pulled

Some cutting happened and a bit of playing around with the squares ended up with this result.  They are yet to be sewn together and the borders added.

Next one  to be cut and sewn will be for a girl.

While the cutting board and rulers were out the second reading cushion cover that was not cut out last week was cut out ready for sewing up.

Thanks Wendy for organising us again.

Back soon with hopefully a couple of finishes and more of that pile of fabric cut out and in the meantime

FNwF

The intention was there to cut out the second reading cushion but that did not happen.

However a bit  of knitting while watching tv did take place.  This smaller sized beanie knits up in no time at all

Thanks Cheryll for organising us again last night.

15.3 Inside out

When reading the title of this week's challenge earlier today it was put on the backburner of my mind until there was a "light bulb" moment and it hit me that in my previous post to this one "my  #2  Chookshed challenge is to make two reading cushions so why not incorporate the two challenges together" as the reading cushions are made by turning them inside out.  Brilliant was my response to myself.   With that  in mind and seeing that it is an extremely hot day what better way to spend the day  than in the cool of the sewing room.    Some measuring, cutting and ironing on of interfacing took place

Then the sewing where it ended up outside in

And then once completed turned inside out to end up like this

Thanks again Trish (taking over Kim's blog) for another fun challenge.   Pop on over here to see more inside out items.

So that now leaves me with one more reading cushion to make and my second challenge will be met.

Chookshed Stitchers Challenge

#2 has been drawn for this month and after consulting the list my nominated challenge is to make 2 reading cushions.   So far all that has happened is to go through the stash and pull out the fabrics.

Next step is to head to the shops to buy the cushion inserts then the measuring, cutting and sewing can happen.

You can see more nominated projects here.
